Ok, so most women (if not all) know that moisturizer is an important part of your skincare routine but it’s one of the most misunderstood beauty products out there. People spend ages finding the right cleansers and serums but a lot of the time, they think that most moisturizers are pretty similar and it doesn’t matter too much which one you buy and how you apply it. Buuuut that’s not true. If you’re not using your moisturizer properly, you aren’t going to see the benefits. Are you making these common moisturizer mistakes?
Not Considering Your Skin Type
Choosing the right moisturizer for your skin type is key. Just because somebody you know recommends a great moisturizer that does wonders for their skin, that doesn’t necessarily mean it’ll be the right product for you. There are a lot of different types and they work best for different types of skin so you need to consider your own skin type when you buy face moisturizer.
If you’ve got dry skin then you need to look for products with hyaluronic acid in it. It’s a great ingredient for locking in moisture so it’ll hydrate your skin well.
If you’ve got particularly oily skin, an oil-based moisturizer is just going to make the problem a lot worse so you need to look at products that aren’t oil based, like gel serums. People that are prone to acne breakouts need to watch out for any ingredients that might cause flare-ups like adapalene or salicylic acid.
Skipping The Patch Test
Whenever you buy beauty products, you always need to test them to make sure that they’re kind to your skin. Most people do this with other beauty products but for some reason, they skip that step with moisturizer. Perhaps it’s because people don’t realize that moisturizer can be harsh on your skin like other products can but whatever the reason, it’s a bad idea to skip the patch test. Always try it on a small area on your neck for a week or so before you start using it properly.
Applying Moisturizer To Dry Skin
Moisturizers absorb into the skin a lot better when the skin is already damp and they’ll lock into the skin for longer, but most people don’t do it that way. Instead, they shower or cleanse and then dry their face completely before putting their moisturizer on. That’s not the way to do it, instead, you should pat your face dry a little so it’s not dripping but it’s still a bit damp and then apply moisturizer.
Not Using SPF & Moisturizer
When the sun is blazing, you’re probably using sunscreen as part of your summer beauty routine. But your skin is always at risk from UV rays, even when it’s cloudy. Over your lifetime, exposure to small amounts of UV rays can still do a lot of damage to your skin so you need to protect yourself. Luckily, there are plenty of great moisturizers that have sun protection in them so always make sure that you’re using one.
If you can avoid making these mistakes with your moisturizer, you’ll get far better results and your skin will be a lot better for it.
Now tell me, do you have any questions or concern about which moisturizer you should use? You can ask me in the comments or shoot me a DM 🙂
Cheers, Y’all! 🙂
I just started spraying my face with a water and essential oil mixture before moisturizing and it makes such a big difference!
I’m such a proponent of SPF in your moisturizer! I use mine every day even in the winter.
So true! Once I started getting regular facials, I learned the importance of the type of moisturizer to us on your face.
I always think that there could be something wrong with the way I moisturize cause I always seem to have breakouts after a few days. Either I’m not using the right products for my skin type or I moisturize too often
I think it has to do more with the kind of products you’re using and your cleansing routine. Shoot me a DM if would like to figure out why you’re breaking out so often. I would be happy to help you 🙂
Such good tips! I always struggle finding a morning moisturizer that moisturizers well but soaks in quick enough to wear underneath makeup without greasy residue.
